aww To Whom or What Do You Declare Your Loyalties and Why Did You Choose Them (?)

In spite of being intrigued by ASOIF for its Conquests , Mysticism and Characters, many of us discovered an

affinity for particular House Banners, Individuals , Mottos or a Sigil That Defines You. Under this Topic please

give your Reasons or Rationale for doing so. I would hope that References be from the ASOIAF series but that

may not cover all our preferences. Please note Historical aspects and Geneaologies with corresponding search

references ( ie. Targaryeon genealogy tree , Wiki Westros source ).  evileye And remember, if there are Non Book

Viewers here, you have been warned.

Loved House Stark from the beggining their harsh unyielding way of life and the honour with which they were raised. However the words I most strongly identify with in the way that I live is House Martell, Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. Love the early years of House Targeryen too.

House Baratheon of Dragonstone. Because Stannis is so certain. And reliable. And he's got sex appeal for a middle aged man completely lacking in any charm or cheer whatsoever.

I don't think we have a motto for the crowned stag enclosed within a red heart surrounded by a blaze of orange fire on a field of sun yellow.

I would not be honest or accurate in stating complete neutrality for ASOIAF people, places or things.
I did enjoy all and sometimes equally but I found an affinity for some as well.

I chose the Weirwood Tree as my Sigil ( not Titus Blackwood ) because it honors the Children of the
Forest. I became intrigued with the Mystic aspects of the books to be sure, and the Green Seers
specifically. From the moment Bran and his siblings encountered Warg dreams and the arrival of
Jojen and Meera Reed, I was hungry for more of their story. It was old Nan that clunked me on the
head initially, but she was silenced before I could form a question. The Three Eyed Crow led me
forward in bits and spurts.

The 3 Eyed Crow we know is Lord Brynden whom resides in a cave beyond the Wall per ADWD

ch. 13 & 34, also A Wiki oIAF. Their location is within caves and caverns forming tunnels where Weir

roots penetrate deep and descendants embedded in them. We know that the caves are warded and

dead men including ColdHands cannot pass. I have always queried whether these neverending

caves were encounterd by Jon and Ygritte.

The Children of the Forest we know are brown and small and hold nature sacred. Their rites and dances

toast the seasons, the air/sky, earth/soil, water and fire. COTF were also vulnerable as many died in

wars with the First Men and Andals. Their powers included some magic including warding the Night's

Watch entries and Castle tunnels. COTF influence is known to many Citadel historians , Pagans and

Religious Followers. COTF mission seems to be at odds with Others magic ( although they and Wights

cannot penetrate COTF safehaven ) and perhaps Rh'llor ( for reasons not clearly indicated , per ADWD ) .

Some of you may be aware that I am a person of color, short in stature and not a child. I relate to the

Greenseers in their external features and the hopes of becoming wise and ancient. However if I would

posess a little magic, I would add an inch or two for prosperity and for indoor tunnel lighting. My

wayward aunt still lives on a hill outside Acorn Castle environs, still mooning over the singer that

travels ser Beric with the hopes of a song or kiss. Please tell her that I send my love.

aww I apologise perfusely lady YvyB because I considered you a Northerner but from the Cranog. The

images of Peat Boggs, Frogs, Fish and Ground Ivy filled my imagination. If you bear no relation to

House Reed then I beg your pardon. If you are related meet me out front for a duel and no you

may not bring that net / spear thingy . smile Oh and I did notice a distant relative of yours at the

Isle of Faces that wishes to speak with you about an investment opportunity ( opening up a

           plant nursery methinks ) .

I am most impressed with the stoic lord Stannis. He is a bit of a cold fish but just and unyielding where

duty and honor is called for. I'm not so sure about House Motto but does Rh'llor have a common saying ?

Like you I impressed with several House Mottos that may or not reflect my chosen sigil. House Stark,

House Martell and House Tully are my favorites.

House Stark also from the very beginning.  My family has always been partial to wolves and when I saw the pups for the first time, that was it.  And also, this is so weird, I have Martells for my second house as well.  Northern by birth, but water people at heart.  Love all the tropical things about parts of Dorne.  Love their words as well. Adore the Red Viper and the sand snakes.  My afinity with bastards and broken things.

The Targaryens are deffinitely the major house I alligned myself with from the get go, particularly because of Rhaegar. As far as minor houses go, House Dayne has always been a personal favourite. Their words are "Fallen and Reborn", if I recall. I don't remember it ever being mentioned in the book, but that's what the internet told me. I hope Darkstar and young lord Edric make it out in the end :D

Well, when I first heard of the series and found one of those online quizzes "in which GoT house do you belong?" I said to myself 'you know what, these Targaryens seem pretty awesome'. Then I took the test and the result was...House Greyjoy. So I said ok, let's see what these Greyjoys are made of. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed after reading the books (prior to ADwD, anyway) but now I love them, fucked up as they are. Kind of a guilty pleasure, really.

It goes without saying though, my allegiance is to House Baratheon of Dragonstone. I'd rather have a bad man that would make a good king than the other way around. And if I can't have Stannis on the Iron throne, I'd gladly settle for Shireen.

A more minor house I sympathize with is House Mormont (need I say why? all the Mormonts are awesome!), and I absolutely love their motto, "Here We Stand". Simple, but effective. And because I love bears. Bears are funny. aww

House Mormont is awesome. The women are fearless and the men devout and loyal. I would
be honored to have sers Jeor and Jorah and his sister as my bannermen or sup at my table.

House Greyjoy .....well I accept their way of life but do not respect their means of piracy and
plunder. Asha and Theon are case studies for me and I am intrigued by their stories. Victarion
is an ongoing question for me now.

I cannot agree with your assertion that Stannis is a "bad" man. He's stoic and shrewd at times
but fair and just in character. He's the typical male that rules the world, same as Tywin Lannister
the the tycoon and CEO of everything. These men live their potential as leaders, their softer
nature in secret and in bed. I wonder if we will experience in GRRM's stories, a woman who
leads and is greatly respected . Khaleesi/ Danerys has me questioning for now. Cersei is a
disgrace. For her the bargaining chip is between her legs and not between her ears.

@ Macha - I took one of those "Which house do you belong to" Tests with a bunch of Friends, and we all actually got different houses which was cool. I got House Targaryen, which I was very pleased with.

Wildseed, that term was a bit of a stretch for me as well, I used it because I remembered something out of ADwD that I was reading last night - sometimes good men make bad kings, and bad men turn out to be good kings. And because I remembered GRRM describind Stannis in an interview once as something of a Tiberius figure. He gave other examples of kings that gained a bad publicity, but were still good ('effective' might be better put) rulers if you take the result of their actions into account, however I forgot the others, Tiberius made an impression with me because I've studied the Roman era more extensively than other periods, and his comparison struck a chord.

As much as I like Stannis, he is guilty of fratricide though. Law and the loyalty to his king didn't come before his family when he supported Robert in his rebellion against the throne, but law came before his family when Renly wanted to take the crown for himself. Yes, one might argue Robert was older, so Stannis owed him some loyalty at least, which was not the case with Renly. But I can't defend Stannis for how he decided to handle his conflict with Renly, and this will come to bite him back eventually. I love him, but I won't defend him in this.

Andrew - I never get what I originally wanted in these tests, grr.  This reminds me of the time a friend showed me a Harry Potter sorting quiz. I thought I have to be in Griffindor and then BAM!...Slytherin. Maybe I'm just a heartless bastard and have a hard time accepting it.

Both strong points.  House Mormont gets a bad rap in my mind.  I think Eddard was too harsh on Jorah about the slave issue.  If I recall correctly, the "slaves' were caught poaching on Jorah's land.  He might have had them killed, jailed or sent to the wall.  One might argue that they would regain their freedom eventually if they were sold into servitude.  Not justifying Jorah's actions, his worst fault was marrying that vile second wife in the first place, and feeling beholden to her, the gold digger.

A woman is most closely affiliated with the Starks in affection, loyalty, and traditions. Was it a coincidence that Jaqen ended up with the Nights Watch during their march north where young Arya needed assistance? You decide.

Had to share this. What is the funniest house motto you've ever encountered in ASOIAF? I'll give mine.

House Codd: " Though All Men Do Despise Us".

Yes, you've guessed it, they are IRONBORN.

Maybe Talisais in tandem with LF... providing an alternative source of revenue for said amputees. And she can bring Robb to all the amputation sessions, we know how that turns him on.... hmm.gif

I cannot recall if Littlefinger said that in the books ( he may have ), if he did, his disgust me ratio just went up a notch.

So far I like Talisa in the GoT series, I hope I don't hate her later.

Sorry, read Viserys instead of Varys and tied it to Lyanna's comment earlier about Mormont's house motto, stupid brain cramp.

How come we were discussing amputee fethishes anyway? Let's get back on topic, folks.

As you can tell I am a fan oh house Lannister. I believe that Tyrion's wit just might save them all yet. I also identified with Tywin before I had ever read the books. The scenes between him and Tyrion in season 1, were spectacular.

I'm a combination of Lannister and Wildling I suppose. A child of Tywin stolen by Tormund. Or a Tormund's daughter married to a Tyrion. It's about a 50/50 split.
