I think of him as an ancient (and fanatic) Roman Republican, like a strange Brutus. Or maybe like an egiptian scribe... but always someone quite convinced and focus. Have to think about it.
And Conleth Hill´s portrayal is pure genius. Amazing actor. Much better than book Varys.

Oh tv Varys is one of my favorite characters! Hes interactions with Tyrion were hilarious. Is it really so far fetched to think that Varys wants someone on the throne that will take the job seriously and not rip the entire realm apart? Or mayhaps he is like the joker and just enjoys creating chaos.

Of course he wants a serious government, that´s why I said he´s like a Roman Republican for me. I´m sure he despises chaos.

Yes, but a serious government of his choosing/making, going so far as to kill Kevan Lannister because he was what...competent? Oh Varys, Varys, I never cared for the guy but I can't forgive you for that one.

And I've always wondered about this bit (taken from the wiki):

Notably, Varys alerted Aerys to the possibility that his son Rhaegar was using attendance at the Tourney at Harrenhal as a pretext to rally Lords to his cause in removing Aerys as king, causing Aerys to attend the tournament, the first time he had left the Red Keep in years since the Defiance of Duskendale.

Alas, poor Kevan.  That made me sad. Kevan was one of the better Lannisters.

Yes I quite like Kevan coming into his own and emerging from the shadow of Tywin...and then GRRM kills him! Damn you GEORGE!

Kevan stood up to Cersei. Only one other person (besides the Septon) did that. Hard not to love him.

Varys as a Blackfyre is quite popular as well, though anything connected with Blackfyres still confuses me, I always mix them up.

Blackfyres technically are Targeryens, just a split branch, they look like Targeryens too.

ser Kevan did what he must to preserve the Lannister dominance methinks. I do believe there was some affinity

for Tommen, not so sure of Cersei. Supporting her was sort of a political evil prgmatic jesture.

I will miss him very much tho, dammn you George !!!!!!!furious

The quote function doesn't seem to be working for some reason. Kevan's POV, ADwD.

“I am sorry.” Varys wrung his hands. “You are suffering, I know, yet here I stand going on like some silly old woman. Time to make an end of it.” The eunuch pursed his lips and gave a little whistle.

Ser Kevan was cold as ice, and every labored breath sent a fresh stab of pain through him. He glimpsed movement, heard the soft scuffling sound of slippered feet on stone. A child emerged from a pool of darkness, a pale boy in a ragged robe, no more than nine or ten. Another rose up behind the Grand Maester’s chair. The girl who had opened the door for him was there as well. They were all around him, half a dozen of them, white-faced children with dark eyes, boys and girls together.

And in their hands, the daggers.

This is were we part ways, Varys, not that I liked you that much to begin with. Really? Fire another arrow, slit his throat yourself. Having children spy for you is one thing (despicable as it may be), but having them do your dirty work is all sorts of fucked up. Grow a pair. evileye

Grow a pair Macha and here Varys is always going on about how his castration makes him a better than the average man cause he cannot comprehend lust.

Nina Gold is truly a wonder.  Casting has been so good for so many characters.  HBO Varys is better than I expected for that roll.aww

More rational, maybe. But who sends little children to do their killing? I liked that scene, make no mistake. It's well written and the children approaching Kevan with daggers in their hands is a really cool (in a creepy like manner) image. But R'hllor damn it, that's twisted. If you're going to kill somebody at least a) have the ball..ok scratch that. have the guts to do it yourself or b) hire a grown up who can discern good from wrong and is responsable for his actions. Varys is a scheming coward. I used to think he's better than Littlefinger, but screw that. At least I can understand Littlefinger's motivation. He's a frustrated individual willing to do whatever it takes to climb the social ladder. But at least he wants that for himself. Varys wants to provoke chaos just so that he could bring in another pretender for the Throne. Whether he believes Aegon is truly right for the job or he simply wants him as his puppet, it doesn't matter - he's doing it behind everbody's back,  'for the good of the realm'. What utter bollocks.

I understand why he uses the children (not saying it's not cowardly but it makes sense to me) from what I can gather Varys is responsible for everything they have, food, clothes, their lives and future, as such they are very loyal and would not betray him. Whereas a grown man who can make his own decisions can choose to betray Varys. I suspect he is afraid if he stabs Kevan himself, Kevan might be able to wound or even kill Varys and that will not do. When you look at him do you see a hero? So while not saying his reasoning was right, plus he killed off one of my favourites, I can understand his method.

He had a crossbow. Which he used for shooting Kevan in the chest before making hist little speech. So why did he need the daggers again?

To not make the guy suffer "here I'm going on and on." With a crossbow he can be out of reach, but as we all learnt last season they take too long to load. So shoot him, if that doesn't work let someone else stab him, but always remain out of Kevan's reach.

That´s a wonderful and painful scene I really want to watch. Conleth Hill will do wonders with this scene.

I know Varys has his reasons for doing what he did (as unfair as they could be). We don´t have to think these kids are regular kids. I think Aegon is onto something here. But grrr, I don´t have time to be the devil's advocate so I better shut up.

So that discussion between Varys and Oberyn in epsisode 6 was very interesting, needless to say. I learn a little more about Oberyn's past and, well, there is a lot being implied between the lines about Varys. Lyanna made me aware of the possible Blackfyre connection. Very intriguing. If Varys is, in fact, a Blacfyre, then wanting someone like (F)Aegon on the throne makes sense. His behaviour regarding how he expects children to do his killing for him, also further illustrates his character. He would rather have a puppet on the throne to control from behind the scenes, than doing it himself.

Ly got to all of us! I was looking last night for a Mormont that served in the Golden Company! Ridiculous! teehee

As for Varys, I think he has a little bit of a soft spot for the Targs, doesn't he? So yes, if he's in any way related with the Blackfyre pretenders, FAegon looks good to go as far as he's concerned. His speech to Kevan surprised me enough to have me thinking about it.

clap Good one....now how do you say "I must live" in Valyrian? Cuz self preservation is Varys' 1# priority.
