The direwolves' names

I've been thinking lately... if the dog's names indicate who their owners are meant to be.

Bran-Summer... I positively think that he'll still be alive at the end and that the dream of spring will be from his POV. He'll be key in whichever event instruments the transcission from winter back to summer, imo.

Sansa -Lady. Is there any doubt?

Robb- Grey Wind. Grey in his stern representation of Starkness, but just a wind sweeping the meadows after all.

Jon-Ghost. After ADWD, if he comes back, he'll be a "Ghost" of sorts.

Rickon- Shaggydog... Full of rage and fear and sadness, smuggled by a wildling into Skagos of all places... When he comes back, I expect him to be savage and fierce and a force of nature whose presence might rally the wild north to him.

Arya-Nymeria... Now this got me thinking... And it's probably gonna cause me to move this thread to crackpot, but... What if this means she will actually have something to do with dragons?

hmmm. Should I move this to crackpot, guys?

--------------

ETA: I originally confused Nymeria with Visenya. Nymeria was a warrior queen, but never had dragons. So scratch the dragon bit.

I agree, dragons and Arya sounds crackpot, and I hope it is.

What else can the Nymeria connection mean? Just a warrior? Warrior queen?????? Hmmm...

Warrior Queen, Let's say something happens to Sansa and Bran doesn't come back, would make Arya the Queen in the North, and a warrior queen at that. The wolves will return?

I thought she rode one, but I think I probably had her mixed up with one of Aegon's sisters. So no, "just" warrior queen.

Hmm, I thought about this for some time before posting. I went from "holy shit, this is spot on!" to doubting some parts of it.
For example, while I believe Bran will end up the series alive in one way or the other (and I'm sure he'll have the last chapter as well), I don't think Summer stands for what will come, but for what was lost. In my opinion, Summer stands for Bran's lost innocence (oh my sweet summer child, what do you know about fear?).

Nymeria - she definitely has the personality of warrior queen, with her own pack and everything. But Arya is so far from that. She is a servant, she *wants* to be a servant. IMO Arya will never be a ruler. GRRM is starting to make a point about Sansa having what it takes to be a queen, but never Arya. With her, is more of a study in the loss of identity, solitude and what it takes for someone to become a cold blooded killer, the way I see it.
It's interesting because apparently he's taking Sansa in the same direction, but Sansa - despite the grief, the humiliations and the suffering - never seems to forget herself. She becomes tougher, shrewder, but never looses her good side. I think Sansa might end up being the best 'positioned' Stark at the end of the series. If that happens, it'd be interesting, because she's also the first one to lose her direwolf. Maybe the direwolves were not such a good omen after all.

Macha sounds like Chuck, "No Ned, you don't give your kids a direwolf, that's just not smart!"

I don't think Arya will be queen either, or she should. I actually fear she would die, but that's for another thread.

I do think though her naming the dog Nymeria points to her strive to become a warrior of sorts. I know she's more of a killer than a warrior, but perhaps with time something will harness her skills towards a more worthy cause? Even if not, the warrior tag still attaches to her. It might also be a more subtle simmilarity between Arya and Nymeria, but I'm sure there is a connection.

Do we know anything about Nymeria's own death, and her particular killing skills?

Very interesting what you say about Sansa not having a direwolf. Never croseed my mind.
Will have to chew on that one for a while.

That was the first thing I looked for, but couldn't find anything on that on the wiki.

I´m afraid that Sansa will learn too much from LF and Cersei. That can´t be a good thing. I have one hope though: If I remember correctly from ADwD is she becoming friend with Robert´s daughter, whatever her name is?

There's one interesting line on the naming of Nymeria " Arya had named her after the warrior queen of the Rhoyne, who had led her people across the narrow sea...That had been a great scandal too. "

Mya Stone? I like her, though for the life of me, I can't see her purpose as a character at all. Not yet, anyway.

Purpose? No more than Edric Storm or Gendry. Just one more of Robert's 16 bastards.

I don't know if he's just saying with her being a woman ...I don't understand the context of "too" unless he just means her taking the dog to sewing lessons would be a scandal ....

There´s a name for this kind of character in dramaturgy, I don´t remember now of course.

Thanks Cary!

He means the fact that she had named her Direwolf after a warrior who was also a woman when she should be a proper little lady was a scandal. It's just as well as she had named her direwolf Brienne the BEauty.

for someone who is so familiar with this story and this writer you seem quite sure of this... but you know, is GRRM.
