Favourite POVs per book
Permalink

While reading the books, we all have certain POVs that, independant of how attached we feel to their characters, and what we think of them, are the ones we most look forward to reading. So if you had to pick the top 3 POVs that you most enjoyed  reading for each book, which would they be?

To refresh your memory here you'll find a list of which POVs are in which book.

By now you all know i'm a sucker for lists and rankings... So... after some musing about this while trying to fall asleep last night, here's my list (I'm aware that it might change on a re-read, but that's how they're standing now). Looking forward to seeing whose ye pick!

----------------

AGOT: 1. Catelyn // 2. Arya // 3. Tyrion

Bonus:  Least looking fwd to reading- Sansa.

ACOK: 1. Tyrion // 2. Arya // 3. Jon

Bonus:  Least looking fwd to reading- Daenerys.

ASOS: 1. Jaime // 2. Arya // 3. Catelyn

Bonus:  Least looking fwd to reading- Bran.

AFFC: 1. Jaime // 2. Cersei // 3. Arya

Bonus:  Least looking fwd to reading- Aeron Greyjoy.

ADWD: 1. Cersei // 2. Theon // 3. Melisandre

Bonus:  Least looking fwd to reading- Quentin Martell.

Tir, you and I disagree often. I am not sure where to begin on this. I will be posting as my retorts emerge.

I tried to stay close to what I felt the first time I read them. On a second re-read, Victarion gets big points for being an awesome read. He's just so incredibly stupid it's hilarious.

Victarion in ADWD is riveting! Fricking hillarious. Enjoyed reading him very much too.

I would love to hear why everyone is so opposed to the Dany chapters.

Oh where do I begin?
She's a walking cliche. Fantasy dragon-tamer princess of an unnatural beauty? Please. It's like every chapter of hers I ever read ultimately comes down to her having her silky silver hair combed, getting dressed, undressed, perfumed, eating figs, crying over some slaves she knows nothing about and burning some wretched fellow. Her chapters are repetitive, full of caricatures with strange names that I'm simply not invested in, as a reader. She holds no mystery for me, and despite all of her "growing" I still feel like I'm reading the diary of a 14 year old girl who's discovered Facebook Causes.

You forgot to add that's she an absolute idiot and a horrid ruler who makes the wort possible choices because she feels responsible for some people that are worse off now than before she came.

I agree with you that she is cliche. But in a series of books thats deviates so far from the norm in fantasy isn't a small but of predictability needed to keep you in the realm?

Yes, you may be right. However I'm not a devoted reader of fantasy, so for me personally there was never any need of fantastical elements to keep me going. In my opinion, Martin writes better fantasy when he aims for mystery with a touch of horror, see Bran's chapters with Bloodraven, the shadow baby - all these seemed a tad more original and much better written than the whole badass queen on a dragon thing. Predictability is exactly the problem here. You know she's going to reach Westeros eventually, you know she'll have a barbecue there, and we knew this since book 1. That made all of her detours even more frustrating for me. If she got to Westeros sooner that might have meant surprises, but now? The only surprise that I hope for now is that someone will kill her bloody dragons and her with them, because then I could say "mmm I wasn't (totally) expecting this".

A Game of Thrones = Honestly I pretty much liked them all even Sansa's.

A Clash of Kings = Tyrion, Davos, Jon, Theon, Cat and Arya

A Storm of Swords = Again I pretty much liked them all.

A Feast for Crows = Jaime, Victarion, Asha, Sansa, Samwell and all the Dorne chapters.

A Dance with Dragons = Jon, Tyrion, Davos, Dany, Asha, Quentyn, Reek, Barristan, Victarion, Jaime, Areo, Melisandre and Griff.

AGoT - Eddard's but I've enjoyed them all to be honest.

ACoK - It was a difficult read. Had no favorites. Arya's were the worst for me though.

ASoS -  I liked every one of them. From Tyrion and Sansa to Jon and Dany.

AFfC - Jamie's by far. I also liked how Cersei's insanity and paranoia were described. The Martells both Arianne, Areo Hotah and Arys Oakheart.

ADwD - I liked every single one of them less the last ones for Dany. I don't know what happened there. Loved Barristan's though.

I have to admit I did not. At least not the ones with the Battle of the Blackwater ones. My mind was somewhere else all the time. They just seemed so dry and lacking luster. I cannot explain why properly without waxing poetic.

Generally in fiction when I read something I have to visualize and hear it. The words just have to come alive. A cliche if I ever typed one, I know it but so it is for me. And between those POV chapters and Davos' ones that whole part of the book was killing me. Read it once, and never looked back. Maybe I'll read it again one day and see something else, or should I say SOMETHING!

I am invested in Slavers Bay, that region of Essos fascinates me. When* Drogon entered the fighting pit and Dany attempted to tame him with the whip I had goosebumps. Plus I binged all five books back to back one summer so perhaps that helped me.

Al, you are not the only one to get goosbumps at that scene or like that part of the story. I got so worked up in the Meereenese knot it's not even funny. LOL I think that Daznak Pit chapter was badass and finally Dany got the inner strength to face Drogon as she should have done to begin with. She was a woman with a mission. She rode the darn dragon!

Barristan's 4 were some of the best written if you ask me. Melisandre is only one but wicked. I really hope we'll get some more in WoW.

I agree that was the definitive OMG freakout moment for me in that whole book. It is funny, Martin basically solved the Meereenese knot by essentially hitting a giant *reset* button on Dany and basically let slavers bay rip itself to pieces with war and disease.

I have not re-read the books since 2011, so my memory is a bit hazy.

While FFC is my least favorite, I genuinely enjoyed the Cersei, Jamie and Brienne chapters...despite all the wild goose chases going around. crazychicken

It's not done yet, Don!!!! But you know what, doing nothing sometimes is actually doing a lot. Plus look at WWI there were more deaths by virus in the US army than war deaths. Talk about reality insertion in ASoIaF. Ooops this goes into a different forum hahaah
