There are rumors that a character that died in book 3 might live on in the Tv show..who might it be?

To be clear, this is a hypothetical discussion. We don't *actually* wanna know who it is , since it would be a Tv show spoiler.

If we find out beforehand please do NOT post it here, this thread is for hypthetical discussion only.

My guess is: Ygritte. I was really bummed when she died in the book...letting her live...at least till season 4 at least might work for me.

My first thought was Cat. As in she gets to live and take revenge without being undead. I know it would be shocking, yes and that Lady Stoneheart would add an even bigger shock element, but I just find that whole storyline extremely...stupid. Sorry. Get rid of her or let her live, that whole UnCat seemed like a stretch when I read the books, even for GRRM. I'm thinking it could save them the whole kiss of life storyline with Beric and Thoros, tho I'm not sure what purpose would Thoros have otherwise? On second thought and as Don pointed out, it would really change the outcome of the RW, so maybe it's too extreme. I have no idea...maybe they're thinking of the Red Viper later on? When I read that interview again it left me with the impression they're considering it, but haven't actually shot it yet, so I don't think it'll happen in S3.

I really don't think they will mess with the RW, its one of the most iconic scenes in the books. It would be like not killing of Ned and even I...an non purist would find that choice very questionable.

Yvy...didnt the bear live? I thought Armory Lorch was thrown in the bear pit later, or was that another bear?

so yes, hope is not Cat... BUT I too think the whole unCat is ridiculous so I rather want to see her alive. Ummm don´t think I mind a big change if it´s good.

All this animal talk made me think. I got it! Hahaa. Orell/Varamir.
That's my ticket and I'm sticking to it. You don't get Mackenzie Crook for nothing. And he doesn't ruin anything by not dying.

EDIT: Then again, this dude doesn't really die until ADwD so...UGH. I'm not playing anymore.

at first i also thought Cat, just to spare us that murky and unbelievably weird UnCat business... but what macha said makes a lot of sense. It wouldn't alter anything to let Varamyr/Orell live, and it's too much of a waste of a recognizable actor and just introduced wildling to kill him. So that's a good bet. I really don't think they'll change ygritte's storyline that much... because of it's tragic qualities.

But wait, Varamyr dies in ADwD right? Because I was only thinking about the moment where Mel burns his eagle. When does "Orell" die? And who the hell was Orell anyway?

Orell and Varamir are the same in the show? Because Varamir is the one that dies in ADWD prologue

Well well well, who might it be?

Don passing Ygritte along as a survivor is a good bet.

She's not a huge player in the books, so it wouldn't really affect the storyline that much: wouldn't be a significant departure from book canon. But, you can't leave that many fan tears on the table from such a poignant death. So ... she dies.

Show of hands of people who want King Joffrey to live. Anyone? How about you in the back? No? Fair enough. Everybody hates the little shit, though I hear the actor is quite good in the role. Should Joffrey make it to the next round, it really fucks up Cersei's character arc. And Tyrion's. And Sansa's. Pretty much everybody's. Joff dies.

Our next contestants on Who Wants to Totally Not Die both hail from Winterfell. In this corner we have Robb Stark, whose survival would mean the death of the best fucking .gif anywhere. If you listen carefully at the actor's public appearances, there's the soft whisper of panties (and plenty of boxer-briefs) hitting the ground. Based on that alone, he might make it. I'm kind of rooting for it because it would fuck the book jihadists so hard, their grandchildren would already be pregnant. I think he's got a slim chance. We'll see if HBO passes on the chance to bring Robb's undertaker's skills to the small screen.

But what about Catelyn? She suffered the worst fate of any character. While I hated the way she ended up, I must say her big reveal at the end of ASOS will be absolutely horrifying to witness on television. And, she doesn't so much lack plot armor as she possesses "crossbow bolt goes here" badges on her tunic. Goodbye and hello, Cat.

Other than Ygritte, the only other main character I can think of whose survival wouldn't impact the series much is Tywin. Really. Tyrion already has to get out of town. Tywin is not in line for the throne: he's not a player to be king. As far as I can tell, should he live the rest of the story can progress without huge deviations from the books. The only purpose I could see in Tywin's death was to send Tyrion into a self-destructive spiral of booze and sexual assault. If you hadn't noticed, people aren't exactly lining up around the block to watch Tyrion's slow roll down the River Rhoyne: Tywin's survival might shorten those tedious chapters.

I think it's Tywin. Unless Benioff is sowing red herrings.

I think Catelyn is not going to die, but go crazy. That way she'll still be Lady Stoneheart. No resurrection. Just a mean single-minded bitch.

Nah, don't think it's Tywin. Charles Dance has already talked several times about how much he's looking forward to his magnificent death scene. It's too good to pass it

If they did decide to do off with UnCat and just make crazy Cat i'd be totally ok with it. Probably even relieved. I never liked the UnCat business.

Atreyu, didnt Dance let it slip that he already knows how his character would die?
I LOVE Charles Dance, but his death scene is too good to lose!

This is all fun speculation but since I'm an old school WiC nerd I can't be bothered to let myself suck into a discussion like this again when GRRM told everyone in countless interviews in season 1 how a character had died that didn't die in the books and would cause a butterfly-effect. Huge huge speculation at the time (Ned, Jory, everyone else I forgot!), and after episode ten everyone was saying: " wait, who the fuck died that didn't suppose to die?" Even Ralinda didn't know. Happened to be Khal Jogobogolomoho or something that magically reappeared in book 5 in one sentence noone really cared about.

So my guess is, third guard from the right with brown stubble and muddy cape will survive.

Dunno, isn't that what everybody was thinking when he was cast? That he'd also take the part of Varamyr? I can't remember if Orell died in the books though and I'm too lazy to look for it now.

I don't see how they could keep Ygritte alive, simply because her death adds so much to Jon's character. She can survive the initial attack and go back to Mance's camp (if the attacks won't be combined in the show), but after the wildlings are defeated what's left for her to do? Take the place of Val? Could be, but I have yet to see why Val is important enough to feature in the show anyway. It can't happen, she can't stay at Castle Black with Jon being lord commander, it would just be terribly awkward.

It's more wishful thinking on my part, I liked Ygritte in the books and I like her Tv character even more. But I agree with Macha, her death was a very pivotal moment in Jon's story so more than likely this will not be changed.

Val is important because she is the sister of a wildling queen, technically speaking, and Stannis wants her married to Jon so that the wildlings and northmen can be combined as an army under him. That is one of the conditions that Stan gives Jon if he wants Winterfell. If Ygritte lives, she will be Mance's sister in law, but from the first episode that is not apparent, Mance doesn't treat Ygritte as family. I loove Rose Leslie, adore her, but agree with most that it is nb for Jon's arc that Ygritte dies. It will bring some much needed emotional depth back into Jon's arc.

It is more believable that Cat's throat gets cut, her body gets thrown in the river and later she is found half alive by the BwB. The only reason I can think of for this, and bear with me, is that later, when Jon gets wacked, Mel will give him the kiss of life.
If too many characters go through this after death transformation, it will be repetitive in the show. The reason why I think this might happen is because GRRM probably told David and Dan what happens to Jon.

I could be completely wrong of course.

Otherwise, Orrell will be kept alive. I can't think of any side characters that could possibly fit this rumour.

With some progression in filming and new-found information, I am tempted to believe Styr, Magnar of Thenn will be kept alive.

It makes sense, if they'll be merging his character with that of his son, that gets married to...who was it? Alys Karstark?

I would have said Kevan, since the Lannisters seem to be falling like fall leaves in October and I don't like them so rare.

It is also a more prominent role in the books and on the plus side it would not mess with any storyline either (Ha! I fear my liking of the books actually shows. Sorry cannot be helped. It is a love/ hate relationship, heavier on the love side); but then I remembered they don't have Kevan in the series, do they?!

Kevan is there in Season Two in Tywin's war council.

I knew I should be doing the rewatch... I was not sure, so thank you Miss Storm! Kevan it is then for me. I am more of a book fan but now that I'll see one of the loves of my fantasy life (a mouthful, I know), I had to get in with the program and exorcise some of my demons through the HBO series.
