Let's talk about what gets chopped, shortened, culled, compressed or cut!

Season 5 is probably going to be the season which will test the loyalty of book fans, a lot of stuff is probably going to face the chopping board.

Brienne's journey will need to be heavily compressed. I could see them completely cutting Brienne's interaction with Nimble Dick.

The way I see it:

I think Season 5 has Tyrion on the Run his arc with Penny works as he goes towards Dany but for 2 seasons?

I agree Nible dick is gonna be deep 6'd, the whole point of that was having Brienne have her first kill in the book, in the Tv show she already killed 54893 people. teehee

I hope they do something with Sansa better than in the book, after Lady Aryyn gets her sweet swan dive so does Sansa's story.

The Greyjoys are gonna get reworked big, some say they might move Vic story over to Asha/Yara ( a shame since I am a big Vic fan ) Euron can visit the drowned god permanently IMHO.

The Martells, oh boy. The Red Viper is a must, but Doran, Arriane and the Sand snakes? I have a bad feeling about them making it. And forget about Quetin, his story was kinda neat and self contained but not needed.

You know, at first I thought they would adapt Feast and Dance into two seasons, but now I'm not so sure. If they want to end the show after 7 seasons, as hinted in the press, then AdwD and AFfC will only be one season, one season and a half. Probably ending with one of the two battles - Mereen or the North.

Plenty of stuff to cut, speed up or change - Brienne's travels, Davos's search for Rickon, add some more plotting and dragon problems in Mereen.

The one thing that I find problematic at this point in the show is Theon's storyline, which they've already advanced a great deal, with at least one more season to come until the Boltons set up camp in Winterfell.

Macha more I think about it, yes the events in Feast AND Dance can be compressed into a single season.

Cersei's paranoia, sparring with Margaery and capture by the religious order, a single season.

Jon's dealings as lord commander, advising Stannis and betrayal by his brothers, single season.

Brianne's "adventures in walking in circles", wait, if this is season 5 what the hell is she gonna do all season 4?
( I think her Feast storyline might be moved to next season, or they invent something for her to do.)

Jaime's breakup with Cersei, dealings with Riverrun ...this can all fit in a single season.

Dany, do we even wanna go there? She does NOTHING in Mereen till she takes a ride on Drogon.....one season, easy.

What a pain in the ass puzzle adapting this clusterfuck story has to be, people saying the show writers have no clue, well they are being a bit unfair arent they?

Can you imagine grrm, that means two of his books are knocked off in a single season, so he NEEDS to get his ass in gear so season 6 can be based on his book.

Don, you know what's even funnier? GRRM is pretty conviced that ADwD/AFfC will be *two* seasons, because all of that stuff that you just described can't possibly fit into one. He mentioned this in a recent interview. derp

D&D have said repeatedly that they think the bloat of the books are a problem and going forward a lot of cutting and streamlining will be needed to keep from jumping around every 3 minutes on screen.

Dorne:
I think we might see only The Red Viper and Arrianne in S4 to establish that House. Then Doran in S5 and Quentin? I would dump his whole storyline, despite his cool death, was a waste.

The Greyjoys:
After Ballin' Balon dies, he needs to be replaced. I the show really gonna bother with Euron, Victarion, and Aerion? Worse Euron and Aerion sound alike, more reason to cut some stuff here. I honestly have no clue how they will fix this.

The Tyrells:
They will establish Mace as he comes to the PW ( the PW is gonna be BIG! Both plot and character wise )
After Tywin dies, having Mace become hand immediately ( cutting out all those silly intermediate hands ) makes sense, and should provide some fun conflict with Cersei.

I love the idea of making ADWD and AFFC into once season and a bit or something like that. I think two seasons will run the risk to be as boring as the books, unless they invent a lot of new plots to fill it up. And by that I deff not mean scenes as cheesy as the mhysa one, or silly plots like the Qarthian coup. On the other hand I love how they adapted and expanded Shae, Season 2 Theon, Margaery and other things... so there deff. IS hope.

I love the Ironborn storyline, so as much as they can keep I'm happy with; but imo the Damphair is disposable and can easily be replaced by a featured extra. And even though I love the Euron/Victarion dynamics, I won't complain if they think they need to unify them in one single uncle. Though I fear if that's the case, it'd be more of a Euron who also does what Victarion did, and we'll lose Victarion's hillarious rumbustious personality, which I enjoyed so much reading, albeit being in the minority there, it seems.

About Dorne , I'd be in heaven if they cut out the entire Quentin storyline and deleted ALL of the friggin Doran's angels "sandsnakes". (If they've gotta leave one, let it be Sarella) Doran and the Viper are all I care to see, and Elaria would be cool too. As much as I don't like Arianne's chapters I suppose the story needs her so they'll have to keep her as well, but on my knees I pray: do something about Oakheart and Hotah, they're just hairpulling boring.

Oh, and Tyrion's boattrip... pleeeeeeeeeeease make it shorter!!!! 51858?AWSAccessKeyId=1XXJBWHKN0QBQS6TGPG2&Expires=1376352000&Signature=XF32jeHfcKb4dsCdROCCwhC9U8o%3D

I am very much in the camp for doing Feast/Dance into 1 season. Especially since I think the right track for the TV show is to go 7-8 Seasons. I would much rather have 2-3 seasons to get the last 2 books right and the ending of the series done well instead of dwelling these 2 books.

I've posted my thoughts for condensing Dany's story on the S4 speculation thread. (Yunkai becomes Meereen and we get alot of Dany's Dance arc) From there S5 conclusion is pretty easy. Can even keep Quentyn's arrival. (just don't show how he gets to Dany)

Brienne can easily get condensed.

Bran becomes a tree... 1 season of this is already too much.

Jon becomes LC at end of S4... so his downfall in S5 makes sense.

Cersei-Margaery power struggle after Tywin's death is tailor made for 1 season. (Ending with the Walk of Shame) (Though they could cut Cersei burning the Tower of the Hand)

Tyrion and Aegon I think is a must, but I think a lot of the rest is cuttable. (Even Penny) He spends a lot of time just switching hands between people after Jorah captures him.

Arya's journey to becoming a Faceless Man in S5 (Her journey to Braavos and entering the House of Black and White can come in S4)

Now to the most controversial cutting areas among fans. Ironborn and Dorne.

The Iron Borne I think are going in a completely different direction as evidence by the end of S3. Victarion could be combined with Euron and just show up later on.

Dorne however... it appears will be playing a bigger part in the books. S5 preview chapters. So I don't think they can cut that there. But it is a self contained plot. Also seeing that we are actually losing major characters in Robb/Cat and Tywin and Stannis/ Wall / North Stories sort of all merge... There is probably room to add another arc. Dorne will probably be trimmed down and streamlined, but is definitely doable.

teehee looks like they are definitely cutting a LOT of it!

I just read this and it is amazing how many things people speculated about. I love it.

Still think Dorne is in. Not sure how much in, but my guess is we will be seeing Doran next season. Arienne too.

Nible Dick is the Jar Jar Binks of Westeros...seeing where Brienne is headed she will be meeting Lady Stoneheart by episode 10.

Feast and Dance are a season and a half- with the half bleeding into season 4 and season 6.

Tyrion gets to Meereen before the end of the season. Will they include the battle from The Winds of Winter? It sounds good on paper, but would require rushing through Dany, Tyrion and Victarion's arcs. I assume the first half of the season will get devoted to setting up and revealing Aegon, who would be on a ship headed to Westeros with the Golden Company by the season's end (though I think his landing is early-season 6 material).

Dany either ends in the Daznak pit or (if they include the battle) returning to Meereen.

Jon Snow gets it in.

Stannis fights the Boltons with a cliffhanger probably in episode 9 to make the scene with the letter more suspensful. I assume that most of the battle will be off-screen if they include the battle of Meereen too, but maybe they'll cut back between the two battles in episode 9 (which could be great!). Davos stays like the book, I think.

Bran gets trained. There is enough there to last a season (even if it's just one chapter) assuming Bran appears in around four episodes. Add some original material to pad it out and you've got yourself enough: Brynden teaches him how to warg ravens in one episode, how to warg trees in another episode (Ned vision please and thank you), gives Bran a Targaryen history lesson (R+L=J hints maybe?)- maybe he'll even explain it through a vision. That's three episodes' worth of material- for a final scene of the season they can have Bran see the White Walkers gathering an army at Hardhome or something (Brynden can also explain that Winter has finally arrive).

Arya gets through her little Braavos arc- losing her identity and climaxing at her first kill (and changing her face!) which will be cool.

Dorne is probably in. No way they spent so much time setting it up in season 4 for nothing, and honestly that storyline is so HBO that it wouldn't make sense to cut it.

The Iron Islands are still unknown. We haven't had an Euron/Victarion mention yet and Balon is still alive. The fact that Yara is turning back home is a good sign for this storyline, but I'm still not ready to take a guess here. If it is in it'll probably end with Yara being Stannis's captive (which I think will happen either way), Victarion nearing Meereen (finding Moqorro?) and Euron fucking off somewhere. Aeron is as good as cut, and I'm happy since his POV is rather dull (at least so far).

Cersei gets herself imprisoned. I'm not sure if the Walk of Shame is season 5 matrerial or early season 6 material (my preference would be the latter, but Lena Headey said in an interview that she thinks that event happens in season 5).

Jamie meets Brienne. She probably goes through some of the stuff from her Feast arc that didn't make it into season 4 (Quiet Isle? Septon Meribald's badass speech about broken men?). I think she meets Stoneheart in the season 4 finale and gets her trial and hanging in the season 5 premiere, then goes to search Jamie for the rest of the season. Jamie stays in King's Landing for a few episodes and then heads off to Riverrun (it seems that he isn't taking Bronn with him after all- maybe Ilyn Payne will make it in?). I assume they won't do the part where Jamie ends the fight between the riverlords from Dance since it has little bearing on the story, and Brienne could just meet him at Riverrun (although that scene was actually pretty funny, so who knows).

Theon goes all the way. He gets to the ruins of Winterfell and helps Ramsay marry fake Arya (who isn't any character we've already seen! Those theories suck, it'll probably be a new casting), gets his confession to the heart tree (does Bran watch?), meets with Manderly (Frey pies?) and Mance, the killings at Winterfell start, he escapes with fake Arya and ends up with Stannis, meeting Yara. Then the battle happens and I guess his fate will be left in question, but this is unwritten material so who knows.

The one that really worries me is Sansa! She had three episodes' worth of material in Feast at best, and the show is already heading into them in force. They are doing the Lords Declarant in episode 8 and it's safe to assume Sansa will have a scene in the finale as well. The fact that they have torn down the Eyrie set is also troubling- it may actually mean that Sansa will leave the Eyrie in the finale or early next season like Sansa does at the end of her last Feast chapter. Which would mean they have absolutely nothing to work with in season 5 for her. The decision to put Only Cat(?) so early in the season doesn't make sense going forward... Maybe they plan on taking a break from Sansa and Littlefinger in season 5 to make some room for other storylines?

I think that's all of them. Rant over!

I've read it ALL, jentario. I do wonder how you see Yara getting caught by Stannis. Right now she's crossing the North and I can only assume she passes Moat Cailin on her way back to the Iron Islands. Unless you still think they'll do Deepwood Motte.

At this point I believe Baleon should have died. They are saving the rest of the Ironborn for S5?Maybe.

My theory about Sansa is that once we have the Lords Declarant out of the way, they will start TWoW material . That's unless they start beefing up her and LF's story with show only material regarding the plotting in the Vale. Either way you are totally right about her being short of material.

Brienne, Sansa, Bran, who else will be out of book-material by the end of S4?
I wonder if they rushed through it now because they know their storyline wouldn't make that much progress in TWoW or it doesn't impact the main players all that much. If they'll be moving in their own little universe, the speed in which they go doesn't matter. Well, we know Brienne will definitely have an impact on Jaime's story, but Jaime was traveling himself, detached from pretty much everything else.
Really, really curious to see how will they adapt S5, which hey even admitted they were dreading.

Without getting spoilery, I think there is enough decent material in ADWD and AFFC to do one incredible season. Jon and Bran have the potential for great season finales. The others, well, not so much. Maybe Arya if HBO adapts the Mercy chapter and leaves out the pedo bit. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Brienne can search for Jamie throughout the second half of season 5, maybe with some AFFC scenes moved around. The first half could be Stoneheart and the BWB stuff.

Bran will appear three or four times. They should just fill those with epic visions, flashbacks and a bit of the Ned.

Sansa has nothing.

I think so too, he'll be in Riverrun, right? Not exactly a search since it'll probably be common knowledge he's there to subdue the Blackf...hey wait a minute, what happened to the Blackfish anyway?

I would add Theon to that list Atreyu. I think he could have a very solid season. Can't see how Bran could though. I'm sure the visions and training stuff will be interesting, but I can't see him having a particularly great arc, being stuck in that cave

I really hope the show makes more out of Tyrion's interactions with Jorah, particularly since there's two great actors involved there. It was incredibly lame in the books, they barely spoke. Less turtles and Aegon, more Jorah.

That sounds about right. Captured by episode 5. I'd say he's in Meereen by episode 8.

Let's make it an open marriage. I want in too!! 52557?AWSAccessKeyId=1XXJBWHKN0QBQS6TGPG2&Expires=1404864000&Signature=O9O1271MsM3PUxLOdpe5ztutNAk%3D

tbh, i never cared too much about bran pov's until i was introduced to this theory (by Macha ). And now I can't wait to know!

What do we think about Jaime apparently being in Dorne sometime in S5? I thought he'd be off dealing with The Blackfish at Rivverrun, or will they leave that and Blackfish's escape (again, lol) for the finale? So far we don't even know he's alive yet. I think we'll learn about him and Edmure in the first two episodes of S5.

With the recent speculation about Cersei's Maggy the Frog flashback scene, I've decided the only way to incorporate a flashback scene is at the start of an episode, cold intro, before the title sequence. And it will probably happen as the season 5 intro. Because we don't need any of those other stupid prologues.

Cut to two little girls.... and it ends with Cersei's first murder.

So many characters, so many new characters coming in. Even with many characters being combined and many being cut, it is still massive. My head is spinning just thinking about it, and I don't have the gargantuan task to translate it into a 10 hour show. freakout
